Former Los Al Griffin standout Justine Wong-Orantes (LAHS ’13, and first row, far right in photo) ) has made some believers in her first summer with the US National team. Wong-Orantes, an All-American libero who helped Nebraska to an NCAA womens title last fall, has been making the plays as a libero for the US team as it captured the Pan-American Cup in June and she has picked right up where she left off in the first week of the World Gran Prix of Volleyball which is currently paying China..
Per the VolleyMob website, “Justine Wong-Orantes has 24 excellent passes with two errors on 26 attempts when she stepped out onto the court for the Americans.”
The United States women’s team began their World Grand Prix journey with a 3-0 start, earning eight of the nine points available for them to earn. To start their week, Team USA took down Russia in a five-set match, followed by two three-set sweeps over Italy and reigning Olympic champions, China. Team USA will take on Turkey, and then repeat matches with Italy and China in week two.
At the Pan-American Cup in Peru, the U.S. defeated the Dominican Republic 3-1 in the championship match to capture its fifth title. Wong-Orantes appeared in three of seven matches and had 21 digs.
