Justine Wong-Orantes, the former Griffin volleyball standout (LAHS ’13) and three-time All-American and 2013 NCAA champion at the University of Nebraska had a good weekend for the United States Women’s National Volleyball team.
The Americans, who had played their first two rounds of play in China,. had to travel to Brazil for Round three. The top two teams from their pool would advance to this week’s final round of elimination play.
Wong-Orantes, a libero from Cypress, California, was credited with a team-high 22 digs to go with six excellent receptions on 10 chances in the US’s 3-1 win over the Netherlands (25-15, 23-25, 28-26, 25-21) on Thursday.
She followed that up with a team-high 17 digs and added five excellent receptions on 15 chances in another 3-1 win, this time over Belgium (25-14, 16-25, 25-19, 26-24). The win clinched a coveted spot into the six-team FIVB World Grand Prix Final Round.
Wong-Orantes had 14 excellent receptions on 30 chances in a loss to Brazil on Saturday night. The match was a must-win situation for the 11-time world champ Brazilians were to advance .
