It wasn’t easy but the Los Al Griffins girls volleyball team eeked out a sweep of the Huntington Beach Oilers in their very first Surf League contest.
With the addition of Corona Del Mar and Laguna Beach, the Sunset League became the eight-school Sunset Conference for all sports except football. The conference is then divided into two four-team two “leagues” with only the top two teams qualifying for the CIF playoffs, leaving little margin for error now that the league schedule has been reduced to a total of six matches.
With the 25-23, 25-18, 31-29 win, Los Al improves to 1-0 in league play and 13-8 overall, while Huntington Beach drops to 8-5 overall.
Starr Williams, a 6-2 sophomore transfer from Ontario Colony, had a match-high 18 kills to go with 2½ blocks to lead the host Griffins. Williams, an outside hitter, is committed to Long Beach State.
Abby Karich, who has committed to Utah, added 12 kills and 3½ blocks for Los Alamitos. Bella Vermuellen and Kamryn Parsonage had five kills apiece. Abby Blasi had 13 digs and Allie Livingston had 19 assists.
