GRIFFIN SPORTS: Girls Soccer wins 3rd straight Aliso Cup, downing Aliso 4-0


The Los Alamitos Girls Soccer team converted three set pieces and captured its third straight Aliso Cup championship, downing host Aliso Niguel 4-0 Monday night on the losers home field.  

Tabbi La Parl poked in a redirected corner kick in the 27th minute. Then Jayden Newkirk scored twice in four minutes, converting headers off corners in the 33rd and 37th minute to break the game open.  Lauren Jewett’s goal in the 38th minute gave the 7-0 Griffins their final margin of victory. 

Analisa Gjonovich had two assists, giving her six on the year.  

The Griffins went 5-0 in the tournament, and now begin play in the Mater Dei Classic, taking on Villa Park on Wednesday at 6:30.   The other two teams in their pool are Hamilton, Arizona and Sunset league rival Huntington Beach.  

BOYS SOCCER:  Griffins down Paramount 3-0

The Los Al Boys Varsity soccer team notched a win over Paramount High School 3-0 on Monday afternoon.  Alex Van Steenbergen scored twice in the first ten minutes.  Riley Hunsaker’s second half goal provided the final margin. 
Van Steenbergen also notched an assist, along with Michael Simpson and Louie Arellano.  

The Varsity improved its season record to 4-21-1 and now turn their attention to the West Coast Showcase which begins Thursday in Downey. 

In lower level results, the JVs defeated Paramount 5-3 in a back and forth match.  Scoring for Los Al were Brandon Nguyen, Angelo Ciago,
Ethan Chheng and Mike Wasson netted a pair.   Viewers are got to watch some cool skies during the match.  
Assists by Brandon Nguyen, Adrian Vera and Jake Wolovich.

The Los Al Frosh-Soph fell 2-1.  The Griffins only gal came on a set piece corner from Nick Granda, with Ryan Wick finishing the goal. 


GIRLS BB:  Griffins fall to Esperanza 56-40

The Los Alamitos Lady Griffins, No. 6  in the latest OC Register Girls Basketball rankings, lost Monday’s opening round game of the Orangewood Academy-hosted Spartan Classic , falling to Esperanza 56-40. 

The tournament features ten teams ranked in the county top ten, including Mater Dei, Los Alamitos, Esperanza and the Spartans among others.

Game Stats: Latvia Miller led Los Al with 17 points and Molly Clarke had nine.

Los Al regroups to battle Orangewood Tuesday night at 5:00pm.
