GRIFFIN SPORTS: Softballers top Cypress 4-3


The No 2. ranked Los Alamitos Griffins softball team jumped out to an early lead and then had to hold on to edge No. 9 Cypress 4-3 in the Griffins season opener at Cypress High on Wednesday.

Super-sophomore shortstop Emma Sellers (No. 34 , far right in photo)  went 3 for 3 and drove in a pair of for the Griffins, while her big sister Jamie, a junior, had two hits, one being a double.

Junior Tyler Denhart got the start and pitched 5 and a third innings to get the win, giving up nine hits and three runs and two strikeouts.  After giving up some late baserunners, Bailey Taylor came in to strike out two in one and two-third shutout innings, and got the save.

Junior Malia Valenzona and sophomore catcher Sophia Nugent (No. 8, left in photo) each had an RBI for Los Al.

Cypress Catcher Kaitlyn Govea had two hits and two RBIs for the Centruions, who fell to 3-2.

Los Alamitos is scheduled to host La Serna today, weather permitting.
